He quickly rose to prominence as a player, winning his first major tournament, the French Championships, in 1925. He went on to win several other major tournaments, including the U.S. Championships in 1926 and the Wimbledon Championships in 1929.

Lacoste was known for his aggressive playing style and his nickname “The Crocodile”, which he earned for his tenacity on the court. He was a member of the famous “Four Musketeers” of French tennis, along with Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet, and Jacques Brugnon.
